About Me!

A former soldier, I discovered computers in the 1980’s and have been hooked ever since. After completing a Bachelors Degree in 2004, I spent the following years employed by Catholic Education and Independent Schools QLD in Central and North Queensland. Now back in Mackay and with an undiminished passion for the industry, I am committed to providing excellent service, quality products and friendly advice.

Computers will eventually start slowing down with use. Just as cars need a tune-up from time to time, so does a computer. With a tune-up,your computer will be as good as new!

DATA BACKUP

In the IT industry, best practice is to use the 3-2-1 rule. That is; you should keep three complete copies of your data, two of which are local but on different types of media and at least one copy stored off site.

Printers are a godsend, they’re relatively cheap, they’re reliable, they’re convenient and they produce high quality photos and documents. However, like any technology, they can have their own set of problems. If you’re experiencing any of the following:

  • Your printer won't print at all.
  • It prints out pages filled with random characters and gibberish.
  • Your printer is displaying a low toner error after you just replaced it.
  • You receive a "Print Spooler" error message.
  • Colours are missing on your printouts.
  • The printout is wrongly orientated.

I’ve been in the computer business for over 30 years and I still get a little excited when I build or buy a new computer. I know how intimidating it can be trying to set one up. Give me an hour and a half and I’ll have it done for you. My setup service includes:

  • Unboxing and setting up your computer where you want it.
  • Updating the Operating System.
  • Setting up your email service.
  • Installing MS Office 365.
  • Loading and configuring antivirus software.
  • Loading and configuring privacy and anti tracking apps.

Windows 10 and 11 are probably the most stable releases of Windows in a very long time. However, things can go wrong. Fortunately, I can diagnose and fix just about any Windows problems.

Malware is software that infects computer systems to damage, disable or exploit the computer.

In 2019, Verizon estimated 28% of data breaches involved Malware. In their 2022 Data Breach report, they estimated that 83% of breaches involved external actors and  74% of breaches involved a human element including social engineering, error or misuse.

You may have been infected if:

  • Your computer / network becomes unusually slow or starts to freeze.
  • You start to experience spam or pop-up ads
  • Your device starts to crash.
  • Your antivirus application stops working or disappears.
  • New files and folders appear.

The above list is not exhaustive. However, if you are experiencing any of the above, it is important to get help quickly. Often the best solution is a fresh installation of your operating system to ensure that your system and data are not corrupted.

Data Backup

Data backup is the process of duplicating data to allow recovery of data after a loss of  data from the primary storage device.  Best practice is the 3-2-1 strategy where there are 3 copies of data, use at least 2 different types of storage mediums and at least 1 backup is in an off site location.

A backup can be:

  • Via Removable Media
  • By Cloud Storage
  • By Network Attached Storage
  • Or a hybrid model encompassing all three.

Most home users and small businesses use a hybrid model. Having built my own NAS servers and installed commercial NAS backup solutions (Synology, QNAP) for home and small business; whatever your need, I can help.

Data Recovery

Databackup & Recovery

A failed or dying hard drive is unfortunately a common problem. However it is not the end of the world. My experience over the last 30 years shows that your data is often still recoverable.

If you are experiencing a:

  • SMART hard disk error 301.
  • Drive not found (3f0) error.
  • Hard Disk read error.
  • Disk is full error.
  • Hard drive error code 0142.

I Can Fix It!

I may not be able to fix the drive, but I probably can recover your data if the HDD or SSD is not too far gone. There are no guarantees, however my success rate is around 85%. If I can’t recover your data, I will bill you for the site visit only ($50.00 if in my standard service area).
